What
happens if we superimpose two strange realities, let us say, two
different cities from a complete different architectonical background,
scale and geography? One possible answer lays in the Sandbangeles
Project, curious mix between Los Angeles and Sandbanks. This visual
research takes diverse aspects from both cities. From L.A.: the idea of
extended urban textures, the relatively geometrical and dry way of
composing architecture in specific programmatic elements. From England,
organic, endless linear elements of the landscape (curves that conform
the suburban grids) and the long, repetitive housing modulation that
goes along the streets in a lazy way. As a result, a dense project
shows "out of time images" where peaceful, quiet spaces or even rather
abstract views appear dramatically cut by artificial elements that
nevertheless belong to the landscape. A highly criticised project, it
was discussed for more than one hour by Peter Cook, Mike Webb and
Lebbeus Wood at the Bartlett.
